If you are facing the fact that you can’t open your personal folder files (.pst), or you suspect that the .pst or .ost files are broken, you can use the scanpst.exe to make a diagnosis and fix the error in those files. The inbox repair tool only scan .pst and .ost files and never check other formats of files. Neither will it scan the mail addresses which run on Microsoft Exchange Server. This tool can make sure whether the structure of files is complete. If there are some errors in them, inbox repair tool will reset the file structure and rebuild the headers.

The inbox repair tool can fix the .pst file for Microsoft Outlook 97-2002 and user personal folder files for Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 and Microsoft Office Outlook 2007.

If you want to start fixing your .pst files, you can press “begin” at the main interface and the system will notice you if there is any error in .pst files. Users can start the repair procedural to fix the problem. During repairing, the system will create a backup file. The name and direction of it cannot be changed at that time. If users want to make a change, they need to choose the relevant menu and type the new name of it in the input box. Or they can simply press the “browser” button to search for files they want. After this procedural, the “repair” button will be available so users can click on it. When the repair is finished, users can use the new .pst file to start Outlook program. It's a very easy process that we actually used to help the guys over at the Alphacard blog when they couldn't access their email anylonger.

In the “go to” menu, you will find “folder list” menu. In it you will see a folder named “fixed personal folder” which contains the default Outlook folders or “lost and found” folder. Because the fixed .pst files are usually rebuilt, they are empty for most of time. In “lost and found” folder there are folders which are fixed by inbox repair tool. The missing items in this folder cannot be repaired.

When you use Microsoft Outlook, you may be noticed that you cannot open the folder or you cannot open the folder group or there may be some error in your .pst file. If you are already encountered these situations, you should be aware of the fact that your PST data may be broken at that time.

A tool contained in Outlook can deal with such a situation. It can recover the files so that users need not to use their backup for recovering. This tool calls inbox repair tool. It was installed together with Microsoft Outlook and can be installed later if you cannot find it in your hard disk.

When you start to use it, first you should terminate your Outlook and search for a file named “scanpst.exe”. This program should locate in the direction of your system files. If you cannot directly locate the file, just search it with explorer.

After finding this program, please run it. It will notice you to input the name of file which you want to scan. Just type the direction and name showed in the error prompts before. You can also use “browse” button to find this file by click the setting button in your explorer and check the option of “show hidden files” to allow you to find the file. When finish setting the file which will be repaired, then you can press “begin” button to start the scan. It will take few minutes to complete the scan. After this, you should choose “make a backup for the file which will be repaired” and click on the “repair” button. The information of repairing will be shown if the repair is successful or you may use the backup file when fails.

If the error prompts showed the .ost file error, you may use OST integration tool to repair the problem. The .ost file is just a data for offline files, so it will make no difference whether fix it or not.
